Documentation of the conference "From Knowing to Doing: How can European Adult Education Activate for Sustainable Action?"
20.09.2023 to 21.09.2023 | GSI in Bonn
The aim of the conference was to invite teachers, educational staff and institutions of adult education and continuing vocational education and training to move from knowledge to sustainable action through self-reflection processes. At the conference, crucial strategies and actionable possibilities were discussed to aid education professionals and institutions in their journey towards a sustainable society.

The central aspects that came up in the presentations by Lea Dohm and Eva Heinen as well as in the discussions and comments of the conference participants are summarised below:
Changing patterns of thinking and behaviour: To move from knowledge to action, it is important to change thinking and behaviour and improve communication. According to Lea Dohm's presentation, it is particularly important to become active and act in groups instead of focusing exclusively on individual action. The focus should be on the "handprint" rather than the carbon footprint, meaning the emphasis should be on the positive effects that can be achieved by changing one's own behavior and influencing others. The handprint is used to calculate what each person has already achieved with their own behavioural changes, including the effects that one (indirectly) generates in other people as well. This provides the opportunity to keep increasing the handprint already described above through one's own actions. This also means carrying one's own convictions into the community and into groups in a way that is appropriate for the target group, and in doing so bringing in one's status as an expert in a way that can be used (compare KlimAktiv).

Sustainability as part of organisational development: Sustainability should be anchored at the institutional level and integrated into all areas of an institution, including everyday work and organisational development. It is important that what is taught is also lived. This includes leadership commitment to sustainable development and regular reminders and motivation by a specific person (a "greenfluencer"). Creating space for discussion and reflection is also important. External incentives and funding opportunities can help to establish sustainability in institutions.

Networking as a central component
Networking is an important component in moving from knowledge to action for sustainable development. Working with like-minded people and in groups motivates those involved, strengthens their self-efficacy and increases their impact. It is important to create networks both within adult education institutions and with local partners, initiatives and supporters. The networks should publicise and communicate their work and successes to motivate further action.
Creating educational opportunities: When designing educational opportunities to encourage sustainable action, it is important to focus on practical learning and the needs of the target group and their social environment. Links should be created between Education for Sustainable Development and everyday behaviour. For example, it makes sense to develop learning opportunities and events for people who have little money, which provide tips and solutions for less consumption and money spending. In addition, participants should be actively encouraged to take action, for example through practical exercises such as repairing appliances, tree planting activities or cooking together in the area of sustainable nutrition. It is also important to broaden the target group and, depending on the context, to include children at least indirectly in the offers.
